Le Jagdpanzer IV est conçu sur un châssis de panzer IV ainsi que train de roulent, moteur, boite de vitesses etc... Toutefois le char est modifié au niveau de la structure du blindage en forme de casemate. Le blindage verticale est remplacée par deux plaques formant une étrave inclinée. Sur la base du canon prend place un mantelet en forme de groin. Le Pak 39 de 7,5 cm peut tirer des obus antichars de type panzergranatpatrone 39 capable de percer 82 mm de blindage sous incidence de 60° à 1000 mètres. le char a pour rôle de canon d'assauts grâce à ces munitions explosives. Pour s défense rapprochée, l'équipage dispose de deux tapes de tir placées frontalement pour l'utilisation d'une MG42. Sur certains modèles, l'une des trappes est condamnée. En ce qui concerne les premiers engins, certains chars sont dotés d'un frein de bouche qui sera par la suite supprimer en cours de production. En mai 1944, le blindage sera modifié, il atteint désormais 80mm d'épaisseur en frontal et 40mm en latéral.

The Jagdpanzer IV is designed on a panzer IV chassis as well as running gear, engine, gearbox etc... However the tank is modified in the structure of the armor in the form of casemate. The vertical armor is replaced by two plates forming an inclined bow. On the base of the barrel takes place a groin-shaped mantle.
